24 pupils from Heap Bridge Village Primary School came to Wheeldon Brothers Waste Ltd in Bury to look at what we do at our materials recycling facility (MRF). Both Miss Hornsby and Mrs. Baker brought their Year 5 pupils down the hill to learn about #recycling.
Half the group stayed in the training room with Mrs. Baker doing an activity on waste. Whilst the other half walked round the 9-acre site listening to James and John Wheeldon. They saw how over 90% of the waste received is converted into saleable products or recovery, avoiding landfill. The pupils are very aware how important the environment is, one boy asked what happens if we have an oil spill with a machine pipe breaking! They looked at trommels, shredders, picking lines, screeners, crushers and balers, all in action. All the boys want a job driving the 24-tonne loading shovels, less were queueing for a picking line operative job! That should help their concentration at school, Miss Hornsby.
After half an hour of walking and talking, the pupils were still asking questions whilst tramping through mud and puddles.
Back in the training room, the groups swapped over hats and reflective vests, joined by Mrs. Baker. They were all engaged, asking annual tonnages, the value of glass and card and where all the waste comes from. All the class reassembled back in the training room for further questions and at the end, Susan Wheeldon helped them make elastic band balls. They were so well behaved, nobody thought to catapult them around the room, phew!
Mrs. Baker and the class gave Susan Wheeldon a beautiful bunch of flowers afterwards. How lovely. Please come again and help future generations learn actively about recycling and recovery.
All the children returned to school at 3.15pm and Wheeldon’s staff breathed a sigh of relief, the children all survived without a scratch! Please follow us on Facebook or Twitter and watch for our next blog on Skip hire prices and the various sizes, it can be so confusing.
