Since 31 March 2025, businesses across England have been required to follow new rules for managing their waste – known as Simpler Recycling.

These rules are designed to reduce landfill waste and boost recycling rates, and if your business is affected, you’re legally required to comply.

What waste needs to be separated under Simpler Recycling?

Under Simpler Recycling rules, businesses must separate their waste into four categories: recyclable materials, food waste, non-recyclable waste, and garden waste (where applicable). Here’s an easy breakdown of each:

1. Recyclable materials

• Glass bottles and jars (rinsed)
• Metal cans, food tins, aerosol cans, and aluminium foil
• Plastic bottles, containers, and food packaging (rinsed)
• Newspapers, boxes, and cardboard packaging

Paper and cardboard must be kept separate from plastics, metals, and glass, unless – like Wheeldons – your waste provider handles the separation for you, in which case you can dispose of them together.

2. Food waste

Any leftover food or scraps from food preparation must be separated. This applies even if your business doesn’t serve food.

3. Non-recyclable waste (black bin waste)

These are materials that can’t be recycled, such as:

• Hygiene products like nappies or sanitary items

4. Garden waste (if applicable)

If your business has a garden or landscaping, items like grass cuttings and leaves must be separated and dealt with according to proper recycling guidelines.

Who needs to follow Simpler Recycling rules?

Do small businesses need to recycle under Simpler Recycling?

This converts part-time hours into an equivalent number of full-time staff, so two employees working half a standard week would count as roughly 1 FTE, not 2 employees.
