Job Title: Plant Mechanic

Location: Wheeldons Bury – Bridge House, Yeargate Industrial Estate, Bury, BL9 7HT

Pay Rate: £16–£20 per hour (depending on experience)

Hours: Monday–Friday, 7:00am – 5:00pm

About Us

Wheeldon Brothers Waste LTD is a long-established waste management company operating multiple sites across Greater Manchester. We run a range of plant and machinery to support our recycling operations at our Bury yard. We are looking for a reliable and skilled Plant Mechanic to join our team.

Role Overview

As a Plant Mechanic, you will be responsible for maintaining, servicing, and repairing a variety of heavy plant and yard machinery used across the site. You will play a key role in keeping operations running efficiently and safely.

Key Responsibilities

Carry out planned maintenance, servicing, and repairs on plant equipment (e.g., loading shovels, telehandlers, grabs, forklifts, yard machinery).
Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical faults.
Respond to breakdowns promptly to minimise downtime.
Ensure all machinery is safe, compliant, and operating effectively.
Conduct routine inspections and record findings accurately.
Work closely with site managers and operators to identify issues early.
Maintain a clean, organised, and safe workshop environment.
Source parts when required and assist with stock control.
Follow all company safety procedures and site rules.

Experience & Qualifications

Essential:

Previous experience as a Plant Mechanic, Heavy Plant Fitter, or similar role.
Strong mechanical, hydraulic, and basic electrical knowledge.
Ability to diagnose and repair faults independently.
Competent working with yard and plant machinery.

Desirable:

NVQ or equivalent qualification in Plant Maintenance or Mechanical Engineering.
Experience working in waste management or recycling environments.
Welding/fabrication skills.
Full UK driving licence.
