You may not know this before booking, but skip hire costs depend on the skip size you choose, the waste type you’re disposing of, your location, and more.

This guide sets out exact 2026 skip hire pricing for every size and waste category we offer, from a small 2-yard skip right up to a 40-yard RoRo skip, so you can budget with confidence before you book – plus what pushes prices up, how to pick the right size the first time, and how to keep costs as low as possible.

How much does skip hire cost?

Here are the starting prices across our skip hire range, including VAT:

Skip hire costs depend mainly on three things: the size of the skip, the type of waste going in it, and where the skip is being delivered. If you’d like an accurate quote based on your postcode and waste type, book a skip online or give our team a call on 0161 764 2000.

If your project’s waste is a mix of plasterboard and general waste, you can put it all in one skip, but it’ll need to be separated by hand after collection, which comes with an additional sorting charge. Let us know before you book if you’d rather avoid this – we can arrange separate skips for each waste type instead.

Why does plasterboard cost more to dispose of?

Plasterboard costs more to dispose of because it releases hydrogen sulphide gas if it breaks down in landfill alongside other waste, so UK regulations require it to be removed separately from general waste. That separate handling comes with its own tonnage allowance before an additional £173.18 per-tonne rate applies.

Here’s how our plasterboard skip hire allowances break down:

Skip Size Free Allowance
2-yard 0.5 tonne
4-yard 0.75 tonne
8-yard 1 tonne
14-yard 2 tonnes
20-yard RoRo 4 tonnes
40-yard RoRo 5 tonnes

How much does wait and load skip hire cost?

Wait and load prices range from £210.86 for a 2-yard skip up to £814.98 for a 14-yard skip, and include a 15-minute loading allowance, with an additional charge of £1.54 per minute after that:

  • 2-yard wait and load: £210.86 – £222.79
  • 4-yard wait and load: £310.01 – £331.82
  • 8-yard wait and load: £422.87 – £461.59
  • 14-yard wait and load: £590.94 – £814.98

Wait and load works particularly well for bulky item collections, small clearances, or situations where you don’t have space to store a skip for an extended period. It’s a convenient option when you need waste removing quickly without the skip sitting on site or on your drive for days.

How much does asbestos cement disposal cost?

Asbestos cement costs considerably more to dispose of than general waste. Asbestos cement skip prices start from £1,303.76 for an 8-yard enclosed skip, rising to £5,866.83 for a 40-yard enclosed container, due to specialist licensing, transport, and hazardous disposal requirements.

Because asbestos cement is heavily regulated in the UK, disposal must follow strict legal guidelines. Guidance from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) should be reviewed prior to booking.

  • 8-yard enclosed asbestos cement: £1,303.76 to £1,546.98 (includes 2 tonnes, then £519.31/tonne)
  • 14-yard enclosed asbestos cement: £1,823.05 to £2,152.40 (includes 3 tonnes, then £519.31/tonne)
  • 40-yard enclosed asbestos cement: £5,459.84 to £5,866.83 (includes 10 tonnes, then £519.31/tonne)

Note: A mandatory hazardous waste consignment note fee (£50.18) also applies to all asbestos bookings.

What affects skip hire prices?

Skip hire prices are affected by five main factors: location, whether the job is domestic or commercial, waste type, hire type, and VAT. Here’s how each one affects your final price.

Location

Where your skip is delivered has a direct impact on cost. Our pricing is split into location areas, with Area 1 typically the most affordable and later areas reflecting increased transport distance and local disposal costs.

As an example, a 4-yard skip ranges from £258.06 in Area 1 up to £300.67 in Area 3. This pattern holds across every skip size, so it’s always worth checking which area applies to your address before you book.

Domestic vs. commercial skip hire

Domestic and commercial jobs tend to need different skip sizes and types. Commercial skip hire clients are also more likely to need enclosed skips, which offer added security against unauthorised dumping and are priced slightly higher than open equivalents as a result.

Waste type

The type of waste you’re disposing of changes the price significantly. Plasterboard costs more than general waste since it must be disposed of separately, while hazardous materials like asbestos cement cost considerably more again due to the specialist handling, transport, and licensed disposal required.

Standard skip hire vs wait and load

Standard skip hire means the skip is dropped off and collected later. Wait and load is different – the driver waits while you fill it, then takes it away immediately – and pricing works differently as a result.

VAT

All the prices in this guide include VAT at the standard rate. If you’re a business needing prices excluding VAT for accounting purposes, just ask our team when you book, and we’ll provide both figures

How to choose the right skip size

To choose the right skip size, match it to the scale of your project using the guide below – picking correctly first time saves you money and hassle, since too small means paying for a second collection and too large means paying for space you don’t need.

  • Garden clearance or small DIY job: 2-yard skip (roughly 20 to 25 bin bags)
  • Bathroom refit or small renovation: 4-yard skip (roughly 30 to 40 bin bags)
  • Kitchen renovation or house clearance: 8-yard skip (roughly 60 to 80 bin bags)
  • Full house clearance or office strip-out: 14-yard skip (roughly 110 to 140 bin bags)
  • Large construction or demolition project: 20 to 40-yard RoRo skip

If you’re unsure, size up rather than down – running out of space costs more than a bit of unused room. Our team can talk through your project and recommend the right size.

It also helps to think about weight, not just volume. Heavy materials like soil, rubble, and bricks add up quickly, and larger commercial skips have weight limits that are easy to reach well before the skip looks full.

If your project involves a mix of heavy and light waste, our team can advise on whether a smaller domestic skip with a higher tonnage allowance or a larger skip filled carefully is the more cost-effective choice.

How much does a skip permit cost?

Skip permits cost £55–£75 across Greater Manchester for a two-week period, with Manchester City Council charging £55 and nearby boroughs in a similar range.

Whether you need a permit affects your final price – you’ll only need one if part of the skip sits on a public road, pavement, or verge. Skips placed entirely on private land, like a driveway or garden, don’t need a permit at all, so there’s nothing extra to pay.

Placing a skip on the highway without one is against the law under the Highways Act 1980, and you could face a fine or have the skip removed without notice. At Wheeldon Brothers, we can arrange the permit on your behalf when you book your skip, so you don’t need to deal with council paperwork or costs yourself.

How to save money on skip hire

You can save money on skip hire in several ways, from separating your waste to comparing like-for-like quotes and considering wait and load hire.

  • Separate your waste where possible. Keeping plasterboard, general waste, and recyclables apart can help you avoid unnecessary surcharges.
  • Book for the right duration. Most hire periods run for 7 to 14 days. If you know your project will run longer, mention this when booking to avoid extension charges later.
  • Avoid overloading. Skips must be level-loaded, with nothing sticking above the rim. Overfilled skips can be refused collection or incur extra charges.
  • Get a like-for-like quote. Always compare prices for the same skip size, waste type, and hire duration, since these are the factors that most affect the final cost.
  • Consider wait and load for smaller jobs. It can work out cheaper than a multi-day skip hire for quick jobs.

Skip hire prices: Frequently asked questions

How many bin bags fit in a skip?

A 2-yard skip holds roughly 20–25 bin bags, a 4-yard skip around 30–40, an 8-yard skip around 60–80, and a 14-yard skip around 110–140. Bin bag capacity is a rough guide only – bulky or irregularly shaped items take up more space than loose waste, so actual capacity varies by what’s being disposed of.

What can’t I put in a skip?

Skips can’t take hazardous or restricted materials, including paint, oil, chemicals, gas canisters, batteries, tyres, and fridges or freezers. Asbestos and plasterboard also can’t go in a general waste skip – both need separate, licensed disposal. Putting prohibited items in a skip can lead to the load being refused or extra charges for specialist removal.

Do I need to be present when my skip is delivered?

No, you don’t need to be present for delivery as long as the driver has clear access to the agreed drop-off spot. It helps to leave instructions if you won’t be there, such as where exactly to place the skip and any access restrictions. You will usually need to be present, or reachable by phone, for collection to confirm the skip is ready to go.
